SAVING GRACE HUMANE SOCIETY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR PLANS TO STEP DOWN IN MAY

Saving Grace Humane Society Executive Director Jennifer Barta said she plans to step down this spring.

Barta said she is making the change due to some family health issues that she needs to focus on. Barta plans to exit her role on May 1st in person but is willing to help remotely part time if needed for a short period of time. She said the recruiting process for her successor is underway and the role should be posted soon.

Barta took over as the non-profit’s leader in 2024. Barta is a certified animal welfare administrator with many years of experience in animal welfare and education, as well as certifications in volunteer administration and emergency animal sheltering. Before coming to Saving Grace, Barta served in leadership at the Oregon Humane Society in Portland for 14 years.

Barta said the team at Saving Grace is the most passionate group of staff and volunteers that she has ever worked with. She said, “It has been a pleasure working with such amazing people and I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment”.

For now, Barta plans to focus on her family. Then later, she hopes to get back into the Animal Welfare arena, working in some way to continue advocating for the animals and their people. Barta said, “This is important work, and I have done it for 17+ years and hope to do it again someday”.

UMPQUA VALLEY AUDUBON/LIBRARY TO HOST NESTING BIRDS TALK

The Umpqua Valley Audubon Society and the Roseburg Public Library will offer, “The Hidden World of Nesting Birds” at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11th.

The virtual presentation viz Zoom will feature Robyn Bailey of Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Attendees can participate at the library on Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard of via the library’s Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/roseburglibrary. A Facebook account is not required.

Spring is nesting season and sometimes the secrets can be spotted hiding in plain sight. Bailey will share a lively and insightful presentation on the nesting cycle. Discover fascinating behaviors of nesting birds, learn how to spot them in a backyard and find out how observations can contribute to scientific research.

Bailey is the project leader for NestWatch, an international participatory science program based at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. She researches trends in avian nesting success using data provided by community scientists. Her work has been published in academic journals, a book, magazines, blogs, and pocket guides. Bailey has been at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for 15 years.

FARM AND RANCH MANAGEMENT PLANNING WORKSHOP NEXT WEEK

Umpqua Soil and Water Conservation District in Reedsport will host the Oregon Agricultural Trust for their Farm and Ranch Management Planning Workshop: “Business Plans & Basic Farm Financials”.

It will take place on Thursday, March 5th at the Elkton Community Education Center library on Highway 38 in Elkton. The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Presenters will have information on how farm business analysis tools such as business plans and farm financial statements can help with decision making and achieving the goals of a farm.

The material is designed for smaller or younger farm operators, producers who want to brush up on financial conversations and farms that might be thinking about making some changes that a business plan might help discuss.

ROSEBURG HIGH SCHOOL THEATER OPENS “YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN”

Roseburg High School Theatre Department presents, “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown”, opening on Friday night.

Based on the iconic comic strip by Charles M. Schulz, this musical revue brings Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Sally, and Schroeder to life in a series of vignettes that explore friendship, imagination, perseverance, and what it really means to be “happy”.

As the gang plays baseball, battles homework, flies kites, daydreams about crushes, and reflects on life’s big questions, the show unfolds through a collection of measurable musical numbers.

The production takes place on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. through March 8th. It is being presented in the Rose Theater at RHS on West Harvard Avenue. Tickets are $11 for adults and $6 for children aged 13 and under and students with identification.

CHAMBER ORCHESTRA/UCC CHAMBER CHOIR PRESENT MARCH MUSIC MATINEE

The Umpqua Community College Fine and Performing Arts Department presents March Music Matinee on Sunday.

The Umpqua Chamber Orchestra and UCC Chamber Choir, under the direction of Dr. Jason Heald will be in concert at 3:00 p.m.at First Presbyterian Church on Southeast Lane Avenue in downtown Roseburg. The concert will include music from baroque to modern including Henry Purcell’s “Te Deum”.

Admission is at the door: $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, with all students admitted for free. For more information contact: music@umpqua.edu.
