BLM LAUNCHES PUBLIC COMMENT ON OREGON TIMBER PLAN

The Bureau of Land Management is inviting public input on proposed updates to the resources management across 2.5 million acres of highly productive timberlands in western Oregon, an effort that underscores the Trump administration’s commitment to expanding domestic timber production and reducing reliance on foreign imports.
Acting BLM Director Bill Groffy said, “Bringing timber production back to historic levels is essential for reviving local economies and reducing the threat of catastrophic wildfires”. Groffy said, “President Trump has made it clear – enhanced domestic timber production is vital for our national security, economic prosperity and effective wildfire management”.
A BLM release said a notice is being published in Thursday’s Federal Register to open the comment period, which closes on March 23rd. Additional information is available at the BLM National NEPA Register: https://www.blm.gov/programs/planning-and-nepa/eplanning, where comments may be submitted through the Participate Now option.
The BLM remains committed too supplying a secure, resilient domestic timber supply. In western Oregon. This commitment is rooted in the Oregon and California Revested Lands Sustained Yield Management Act of 1937, which ensures sustainable forestry practices that support communities and livelihoods.
The release said revenue from timber harvested on these lands is shared between the U.S. Treasury and 18 western Oregon counties – funding essential local services such as schools, libraries, public safety, and infrastructure projects. Each year, BLM timber sales support approximately 2,000 local jobs and generate more than $1 billion for local economies.
AFRC APPLAUDS INTERIOR’S DECISION TO REVISIST FOREST MANAGMENT PLANS

On Wednesday. the American Forest Resource Council welcomed the Department of the Interior’s Notice of Intent to initiate a revision of the Bureau of Land Management Plans governing the O&C Lands in western Oregon.
An AFRC release said the action begins a long-overdue reassessment of the 2016 management plans that have constrained active forest management on more than two million acres of some of the most productive timberlands in the world.
The O&C Act of 1937 requires these unique lands to be managed under principles of sustained yield timber production, with revenues shared with western Oregon counties to fund essential public services. For decades, that framework supported family-wage jobs, stable county budgets, and healthy, working forests.
AFRC President Travis Joseph said, “The Department of the Interior is taking an important and necessary step”. Joseph said, “The O&C Lands were set aside by Congress to be actively managed for the benefit of O&C counties and rural communities in Western Oregon. The 2016 plans failed to meet a clear legal mandate and limited the ability of land managers to responsibly steward these lands”.
AFRC expressed its commitment to working constructively with the Department of the Interior, BLM, O&C counties and stakeholders throughout the revision process.
Joseph said, “We appreciate the Department’s leadership in initiating this review”. Joseph said, “This is a unique and rare opportunity to restore responsible management of the O&C Lands and ensure they once again support both healthy forests and healthy communities”.

DRUG COURT PARTICIPANT LEADS THRIVING FOR GROWTH COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT

A graduate phase participant in the H.O.P.E. Drug Court hopes to make a positive impact on the Roseburg community through a service initiative called Thriving for Growth. The project focuses on beautification, sustainability, and community wellness through hands-on volunteer efforts.
A Douglas County Circuit Court release said as part of the initiative, participant Kevin Davidson recently helped revitalize the Gateway Community Garden, located at the Roseburg Senior Center. Improvements included repairing and expanding raised garden boxes, adding fresh soil, and installing new weed-control tarp to enhance the garden’s usability and longevity. The garden project continues to welcome community support and donations, particularly additional soil, cedar lumber for garden boxes and seeds for the raised garden beds.
A second component of the Thriving for Growth initiative will focus on a volunteer led cleanup on Thrive Umpqua’s adopted stretch of the bike path running from the Duck Pond to the Tennis Center, just east of Northwest Stewart Parkway. The cleanup event is scheduled for Saturday, March 7th, and community members are welcome to join in supporting a cleaner, healthier outdoor space.
A third component of this project is to assist Thrive Umpqua with the cost of their monthly class for Eating Healthy on a Budget to support individuals utilizing the Progress Point facility operated by Adapt Integrated Health Care. To help fund the class, a community can and bottle drive is underway.
For more information on the Thriving for Growth project, call participant Kevin Davidson at 458-802-8412.
The H.O.P.E. Drug Court program will celebrate its 112th graduation on Tuesday, March 31st at 5:15 p.m. in the Cascade Hall at the fairgrounds.
