Flood Watch Issued For Douglas County And Surrounding Areas Through Wednesday Evening
A Flood Watch is in effect for central Douglas County and surrounding areas from Monday evening through Wednesday evening. Heavy rain and rising snow levels may cause rapid runoff, leading to possible flooding of creeks, streams and low-lying areas. Residents should monitor forecasts.
A Flood Watch has been issued for central Douglas County and much of southwest Oregon and northern California as heavy rain and snowmelt raise the potential for flooding from Monday evening through Wednesday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Medford.
The watch includes central and western Douglas County, Curry, Coos, Josephine and Jackson counties in Oregon, as well as portions of western Siskiyou County in California. Communities listed include Roseburg, Sutherlin, Scottsburg, Canyonville, Tiller and surrounding areas.
Forecasters say flooding caused by excessive rainfall and melting snow is possible. Small drainages, creeks and streams are of particular concern, especially where remaining snow in the hills and mountains could melt and add to runoff.
Heavy rain is expected to continue through Tuesday. With snow levels rising, any remaining snowpack may contribute to rapid rises in creeks and streams and increase the risk of flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Urban locations with poor drainage may also see localized flooding.
Excessive runoff could lead to rivers, creeks and streams rising out of their banks. Residents in areas prone to flooding are advised to monitor forecasts and be prepared to take action if Flood Warnings are issued.
The Flood Watch is in effect from Monday evening, Feb. 23, through Wednesday evening, Feb. 25. Residents are encouraged to stay alert to changing weather conditions and monitor updates from the National Weather Service.
